Hypertension: 30 minutes of walking a day help to lower blood pressure

30 minutes of exercise in the morning lowers blood pressure for the rest of the day, especially for men or women of advanced and overweight age. This result, based on new research , can be further improved if patients take frequent breaks during their workday.
"The health effects of physical exercise and sedentary lifestyle have so far been studied separately, so we wanted to know if there was a combined effect of these behaviors on blood pressure," said Michael Wheeler, director of the study ( Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute , Australia).

Three scenarios

Sixty-seven men and women (aged 55 to 80 years) with hypertension followed three different scenarios six days apart: sitting for eight hours without exercising; sit for an hour, walk 30 minutes on a treadmill, then sit for 6 hours and 50 minutes; sit for an hour, walk 30 minutes on a treadmill, then sit for 6 hours and 50 minutes walking 3 minutes every half hour.

The researchers found that the average blood pressure was lower for men and women who walked in the morning compared to those who did not exercise. A significant reduction in mean systolic blood pressure * was also observed in women when they combined morning exercise with frequent breaks throughout the day, but not in men.

A "silent killer"

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (coronary insufficiency, stroke , kidney failure, heart failure, arterial aneurysm, aortic dissection, arrhythmia, dementia..) ... Professionals call it the " silent killer ", Dr. Claire Mounier-Vehier, cardiologist and president of the French Federation of Cardiology, adds: "The disease is most often silent but can be manifested by a set of non-specific symptoms: fatigue, morning headaches, vertigo. , flies in the eyes, tinnitus, palpitations, lack of concentration or feeling of oppressed chest are all signs of the disease.
